History
Written in 1919 for the Broadway Musical "Irene", the title refers to a gown worn by Theodore Roosevelt's daughter; Alice Roosevelt Longworth. The gown was a light cyan color, ("Alice Blue") and it sparked a fashion sensation in the United States. The musical was made into a movie in 1940 starring Anna Neagle and Ray Milland.
Alice Blue Gown In my sweet little Alice blue gown, When I first wander'd down into town I was both proud and shy, As i felt ev'ry eye, But in ev'ry shop window I'd primp, passing by Then in a manner of fashion i'd frown And the world seemed to smile all around, Till it wilted I wore it, I'll always adore it, My sweet little Alice blue gown.
